Bedminster 2nd XI vs. Bishopston 2nd XI
Played at The Clanage on Saturday 18th June 2005
The first truly hot day of the summer produced an invigorating contest between two evenly matched teams towards the top of the table. On a flat biscuit coloured pitch Bishopston won the toss and somewhat surprisingly opted to field first in the sunshine. The hosts openers, Neil Brown and Craig White, got off to a slow start with 4 coming from the first 4 overs. Brown then hit two fours in an over to give the innings some impetus. With White struggling to time the ball the run rate faltered somewhat before Brown was bowled trying to force the issue. His 43 coming from only 49 balls. Mark Harrison was soon away, dispatching his first two deliveries for four. White was then out caught for 22 from 61 deliveries. Rich Ireland then joined Harrison and the tempo increased as both picked off the runs. The partnership was worth 63 in the 32nd and a big score looked on until Harrison was caught off his 33rd ball for 43. The innings then fell apart as the middle order were whistled out. Only one of the last 7 batsmen getting into double figures. The home team eventually stumbling to a competitive 213 which did look slightly short of a par score.
Dan Bryant took the new ball down the hill and bowled with pace and aggression. He was unlucky not to pick up more wickets in a fiery first spell and had to be content with inducing Bell to offer a thin edge to the keeper who held it at the second attempt. This brought Phil Adams to the crease and he was soon into his stride dispatching anything loose. Kev Moore took over from Bryant and cleaned Young out for 17 to leave the match in the balance. The hosts built their innings around a battling hundred from Adams who was dropped twice in the outfield and once behind. MacBean claimed his 20th wicket of the season but it was apparent that the key to the game was Adams. Bryant, reintroduced to the attack, troubled him outside off stump until Adams skied a return catch which Bryant held brilliantly over his head to tilt the match in Bedminster’s favour. With fine support from Bailey at the other end the run rate mounted until 22 were required from the final over bowled by Bryant. The visitors were unable to make any headway and a final ball run out gave the hosts another bowling point. A fine battling win for Bedminster against a previously unbeaten team saw the band wagon roll onwards towards the half way point of the season.
