Phoenix West Indies 2nd XI vs. Bedminster 2nd XI
Played at Kings Weston on Saturday 28th May 2005
The bank holiday double header drew Bedminster against the two overseas teams in the league. First up was a visit to the notorious Kings Weston ground, home of Phoenix West Indies. With a new pavilion the facilities at least included running water and hot showers, but the pitch contained enough weeds and bare patches to have any self respecting groundsman reaching for the razor blades. Paul Pillinger having won the toss, had no hesitation in putting the visitors in on a blustery but sunny day. Kevin Moore was unlucky to see the ball fly straight through gully’s hands in his opening over and with the home batsman starting in aggressive fashion the ball began to fly about. Moore struck first, summoning a shooter to pin Wright in front of all three. Dan Bryant, from the opposite end provided good support with an aggressive spell, finally rewarded when Gardner was given out leg before without scoring. The introduction of spin applied pressure from both ends, with MacBean providing control and Durston turning the ball around corners. Tom Durston struck first as Ireland scooped up a catch at midwicket to remove Joyner. Home skipper Rahman didn’t trouble the scorers, undone by Durston. The pressure forced the Phoenix batsmen to take risk and two run outs courtesy of direct hits from Durston and Sam Knapp hastened the demise of the middle order. MacBean took two wickets at the other end and with Durston finally cleaning out opener Hyltoa for 54 the innings closed on 165-9.
For the first time in the season the Bedminster opening partnership failed to get the innings of to a flier, Pillinger cutting his fourth ball straight to the man at point. This however, only hastened the arrival of Terry Barnes at the wicket, who proceeded to put together a partnership of exactly 100 with Neil Brown. Both batted sensibly with Brown scoring mainly in ones and twos and Barnes providing boundaries at the other. The introduction of Gardner to the attack brought about the wicket of Brown caught for 32, the partnership having added exactly 100 in 22 overs to set the platform on which the reply was built. Barnes then departed for his second score of 66 in three innings, bowled by Gardner. Rich Ireland was undone by one which kept low and Craig White offered up a catch to give the home side hope. Paul Dadds shored up the innings ably assisted by a mature knock from Sam Knapp to see the visitors home by 5 wickets with 3.1 overs to spare.
