The Indoor Campaign – Finals Day
12th Mar 2006 at The County Ground
Bedminster were asked to field after the PWI skipper had called correctly at the second time of asking. Gayle got off to good start with Ashley Joyner struggling to pick off some tight bowling from Weeks and Knapp. The pressure eventually became too much for Ashley when Knapp induced a false shot to have him out roofed in Knapps final over. Weeks' 3 overs went for 14 without success and Knapp finishing with 1 for 16 off of his 3.
Tryfanos came on to Bowl and Gayle decided to progress quickly to retirement with a couple of 6s. The runs then dried up as Tryfanos and Carter made it difficult to score and then things got worse as Max Joyner played and missed at a pacey delivery from Carter only to be stumped by a sharp piece of work from McCormack stood back. Tryfanos then took a wicket caught by Pillinger behing square on the leg side in his next over and then Carter took another in his following over. The crucial blows came in Tryfanos' final over where he removed the dangerous Gayle and Rahman both stumped to end the innings on 57.
McCormack and Tryfanos then set about the task at a steady pace being watchful of Virgos tight lines and picking up runs off of Smith and then Gayle with some cheeky running and good placement. It was all too late when Max Joyner came into the attack and conceded 7 runs from a solitary over with the required runs coming off the last ball of Gayles second over. Bedminster had put in a solid all round performance to win comfortabley by 6 wickets.
The final saw the opposition skipper call correctly again, but this time asked Bedminster to bat first. Disaster struck straight away with McCormack being caught off the wall first ball. Nice had got Failand off to a great start with a wicket maiden for the first over. Progress was slow as Bedminster consolidated. Nice was taken off after his second to preserve an over for later while Mistery was taken for 18 off of his 3. Carter and Tryfanos then took advantage of some poor bowling from Trinneman. Carter retired and Tryfanos fell on 19 after taking 41 from Trinnemans allotted overs. Pillinger and Knapp fell unselfishly for the cause both run out which left Carter and Weeks to finish setting the total. They both fell in the last over trying to advance the score with Carter making an impressive 39 and Weeks contributing a vital 12. Nice finished with superb figures of 4 runs for 3 wickets off of 2.3 overs after coming back for the final over, Bedminster had made 92.
Failand were confident after chasing 114 off of the last ball in their semi final encounter with Old Bristolians Westbury, but struggled to score freely with the tight field set for them. Their running tactics were watched closely in the semis by Bedminster and no freebies were given as the pressure mounted. Knapp bowled with maturity which belayed his age to return again impressive figures of 3 overs for 17 runs. Weeks was equally miserly forcing Trinneman to hit the roof and removing his opening partner before finshing with 2 for 11 off of his 3 overs. A very risky run then accounted for Fellows in Tryfanos' first over as the non striker ran to a ball that rebounded off the back wall straight back to the keeper who found him just short of his ground after just passing his hesitant partner. The failand skipper was next to fall in Carters only over as he tried something different to break the shackles. Humphries (H) advanced down the pitch to miss a sharp delivery which cannoned into middle stump after stroking 16 runs. Carter also picked up the wicket of Mistry in the over to finsh with 2 for 1 off of 1 over. Tryfanos then finshed off the innings having Nice stumped with a well flighted big turning leg break. With another professional performance Bedminster took their second indoor league title in three years.
